Kinks 101

It does feel sad that Gareth never even explained himself to Leslie- or Jeanie and Jack for that matter. He’s a very well written character in spite of that though- it’s easy to understand how he could get into such a fucked mental state without necessarily endorsing his emotional immaturity and other personality issues that led to him lashing out. The characters are all very well written I’d say, and the author’s prose is very versatile for being able to be funny, sexy and aggravating (in a good way) throughout the story. If there’s any character I feel disappointed by though, it’s Violet. The author is very good at writing her to be hot and cool but fails to really examine her behavior in the way they do everyone else’s. I think the story should criticize her at least a little bit for (not necessarily intentionally on her part) taking advantage of Garreth and others social isolation to get them hooked on her then dumping them whenever she gets bored. Genuinely a very shitty thing to do and the main thing that led Gareth to reach the mental state he did. I’m not saying that he’s a victim in the story or like secretly the hero, but it is very tragic to just see him become known as the guy who got a high school girl harassed and then tried to abuse another girl when his story is more complicated than that (which the author themself acknowledges) while Violet, who is in part responsible for this, gets off Scott free.
